Peace Hub gets third birthday makeover
The Peace Hub in Birmingham has re-launched its Centre
Peace Hub, the Quaker Peace and Justice Centre in Birmingham, re-launched its Centre this month, showcasing a new cafe-style layout designed to attract more visitors.
The celebration, on 18 March, marked the Centre’s third birthday. It was followed by a workshop at Bull Street Meeting exploring how Friends can take action for peace in their own lives, as part of its ‘Peaceful Brum’ theme.
Peter Doubtfire, coordinator of the Peace Hub, and a member of Bull Street Meeting, told the Friend: ‘We wanted to help people identify things they could do for peace that might take them out of their comfort zones. By the end of the workshop, they made a plan to find the support and skills they need to put them into action. What puts many people off is the fear they might face conflict, so we explored how they might deal with this.’
According to Peter Doubtfire, people’s pledges included ‘going on a demo, sharing a meal with someone from a different culture, checking if someone is okay, welcoming someone new at a place you regularly go to, posting peaceful messages in random places, and holding a workshop for children on peace.’
He added that the Peace Hub’s new layout has so far attracted more visitors and ‘the atmosphere is more relaxing when they come in’.
