Quakers were involved in a ‘Trees of Peace’ installation on display in Coventry Council House last month; it will be touring Coventry libraries for the rest of 2024. The installation features more than 1,000 multi-coloured origami cranes handcrafted by school pupils in Hiroshima and a local school in Coventry. The project was partly organised by the Coventry Lord Mayor’s Peace Committee, which includes two longstanding Quaker members: Carol Rank, of Coventry Meeting, and David Fish, of Rugby Meeting.

Jaswant Singh Birdi, the lord mayor of Coventry, who was presented with the artwork on 24 January, said the work with young people was ‘vital so our next generation begin thinking about peace and friendship at an early age’. The gift was from Hiroshima and the Embassy of Japan.
