Peace campaigners have shared photographs and other memorabilia for an online exhibition remembering the late Bruce Kent, former general secretary of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND).

CND invited people to send in their photographs, memories and tributes for ‘Remembering Bruce Kent’ after the former Catholic priest died on 8 June 2022, just before his ninety-third birthday. The organisation said it has been inundated with contributions from across the global peace movement spanning over forty years.

Kate Hudson, CND’s general secretary, said: ‘The scale of submissions and touching tributes is testament to the inspirational impact that Bruce had on so many, throughout the course of his life and work. This exhibition showcases the humour, compassion, and tenacity Bruce brought to his campaigning. No cause was too big or small, no person less or more important.’

As well as showing images from CND’s own archives, the exhibition shares memories from groups including Movement for the Abolition of War (MAW); Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF); Musicians for Peace and Disarmament (MPD); Pax Christi; and the London Peace Pagoda. A spokesperson for CND told the Friend that they were still happy to receive submissions if Quakers had any to share.

Friends from Bury St Edmunds Meeting told the Friend that they had been very inspired by visits and talks by Bruce Kent, while Quaker Jill Segger described him in 2019 as a ‘remarkable and indefatigable campaigner’. Friends there shared an image of Bruce Kent visiting the Meeting with the Friend (pictured left).
