Paying our way, almost…

George Penaluna, advertisement manager of the Friend, writes about the charity that publishes the magazine

The Friend is published by a charity, The Friend Publications, which has a board of Quaker trustees and a small number of paid staff. Both editorially and in governance, we are independent of Britain Yearly Meeting. In the last financial year to June 2014, our subscription and advertisement income covered nearly ninety-two per cent of our costs, with a modest level of much appreciated grant income also helping. We suffered a financial deficit of just over £15,000, however, the first for several years. This was largely the result of having to pay a £10,093 pension fund charge and an unexpected VAT liability of over £6,000.
