Paris Friends hold circle of silence for Peace
Eleven Friends held their ‘circle de silence pour la Paix’ in Place Joachim du Bellay, on 21 September.
Paris and Ile de France Quakers were given eleventh-hour permission to witness for peace in the French capital last month.
Eleven Friends held their ‘circle de silence pour la Paix’ in Place Joachim du Bellay, on 21 September, close to the central, pedestrianised area of Fontaine des Innocents.
Myfanwy Thomas, from Paris Meeting, told the Friend: ‘During the silence, Anna, one of our teenagers, drew peace symbols and mottos on the paving. Some passers-by stopped to read the placards and look at the symbols. After we had joined hands to close the Meeting, the messages written in chalk on the paving remained as a continuing witness to our prayer for peace.’
The Quakers did not ask to hold a Meeting for Worship as ‘any hint of religion in the street is a very touchy subject in France,’ added Myfanwy.
The witness was organised by Paris Meeting’s peace committee.
