Paintings on ‘The Life of George Fox’
An exhibition of paintings depicting George Fox's life has been on display in Harpenden
Harpenden Meeting House displayed an exhibition of paintings last month illustrating ‘The Life of George Fox’.
The exhibition by John Goodey, the New Zealand Quaker artist, was part of the Cultivate Arts Festival, organised by Harpenden Churches Together, from 21-24 June. The pictures will be on show in the main Meeting room until Quaker Week in October. It is hoped they will then be exhibited at other Quaker venues.
Donald Robertson, clerk of Harpenden Meeting, told the Friend: that on one day the exhibition attracted about forty members of the public. He said: ‘This was very encouraging as it is more than we have experienced for similar outreach events.
‘All visitors to the exhibition were given a leaflet explaining the depiction of significant experiences in George Fox’s life as illustrated in the paintings. They learned a lot about Quakers and it was an opportunity for us to talk about our faith and history.’
Donald Robertson said the paintings came from Street Meeting in Somerset, but were originally housed at Westminster Meeting, when John Goodey brought them to the UK.
