Seven Quaker women are showcasing their work at Oxford Meeting House this month, as part of Oxfordshire’s annual ‘Artsweek’ festival.

Writing in the Oxford Friends’ newsletter, Friend Rebecca Howard said: ‘It so happened that we were all women, so we decided to make a feature of that even though it hadn’t been a deliberate plan.’

‘Our ages range from forty upwards, and we have a diverse range of artistic media, including painting, printmaking, textiles and 3D work. What unites us is our Quaker spirituality, which informs our artistic practice in different ways.’

The ‘Seven Quaker Women’ exhibition is on until 29 May and features Rebecca Howard, Juliet Henderson, Karima Brooke, Carol Lange, Trio Watson, Anthea Richards and Anthea Clarke.

The Artsweek festival is being supported by Quaker Judi Dench, who is exhibiting a piece for the ‘My Lovely Postcards’ exhibition at the St John the Evangelist Arts Cloister Gallery until 29 May. Over 400 original postcard artworks will be auctioned to raise money for nurses at Sobell House Hospice Charity.

Judi Dench said: ‘Sobell House were so wonderful to my friend Joanne Hope who died last year. I visited her there and I know how comfortable she was and how much easier they made it for her. I thank them very much indeed and hope this project raises a huge amount of money.’
