An open afternoon took place at the Quaker burial ground at Arundel Avenue, Liverpool on 12 June.

The burial ground is the setting for a wildlife garden and community orchard project that was funded by a Quaker Peace & Social Witness sustainability fund grant. The project is run by a local community group, Lisa Hoyle of Liverpool Meeting explained.

She said: ‘We have a keyholder arrangement with the group to ensure that there is a clear understanding that the site is primarily a burial ground but we have encouraged the group to involve members of the community.

‘We have recently arranged for the local secondary school, St Hilda’s Church of England High School, to become keyholders, too, and they are very excited about the potential it has to enhance the curriculum for religious education, history and geography,’ she added.

Local newspaper the Liverpool Echo recently included the burial ground in a list of twenty ‘hidden gems’.
