Young Quakers take to the water to raise funds for refugees

by Rebecca Hardy 26th January 2018

Young Quakers at Penrith Meeting, Cumbria, are braving the winter weather to canoe the length of Ullswater in aid of refugees.

A team of twelve, including six Young Quakers, will start at 9am on Saturday 27 January.

Writing on the JustGiving page, which has enabled them to raise £1,000 so far, they say: ‘Over the past five years we have fundraised as a Meeting to support men, women and children caught in the war in Syria and the ensuing refugee crisis.’

The group add that they are canoeing across the lake ‘to raise awareness of the awful journeys that many people have or have had to make across the sea in winter.’

All money raised will go the United Nations High Commissioner For Refugees (UNHCR) to help displaced people across the world.
