On not being called

Kevin Hogan reflects on being prompted to minister

Yearly Meeting is often a moving experience. This is not, on the whole, due to the quality of the ministry, which, with a few heart-touching exceptions, I usually consider no better than in my own Local Meeting. It is the joint purpose that is felt so powerfully among the hundreds gathered. As the ministered offerings become fewer and more ‘pointed’ we begin to reach a point where the clerk acts with us and we are all moved by the same Spirit. In practice this point is reached by the discipline of those offering ministry. Either they act with restraint themselves or the Meeting moves on without calling them. Twice at Yearly Meeting 2014 I experienced not being called. This cannot be an uncommon experience and I want to share what it felt like.
