Nuclear disarmament – and the sanctity of life

A reflection on a recent conference where international medics called for nuclear disarmament and the sanctity of life

In a world already threatened by the consequences of climate change, economic collapse and the brunt of wars borne principally by civilians, the existence of any nuclear arsenal, particularly our current combination of over 23,000, speaks dire peril. Medical professionals have long been involved in speaking truth to power on this issue and many came together in Basel, Switzerland, in late August for the nineteenth congress of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW).
