Norwich Quakers discuss spirituality and economics

Friends ask: 'What's spiritual about economics?'

Norwich Quakers are hosting a public debate this week asking the question: ‘What’s spiritual about economics?’

The speakers at the event on 20 May at Norwich Meeting House will challenge ‘the fixed nature of today’s system and discuss how to redesign the economy for the twenty-first century’, with debates from political economist and professor Richard Murphy and ‘Extinction Rebel’ doctor Rupert Read. The event will be chaired by Teresa Belton, author of Happier People Healthier Planet.

According to Quaker Lesley Grahame, Green Party councillor, ‘Quakers have long believed in the equal worth of each person, yet we live in a time of increasing inequality, which has life-threatening consequences for some and unimaginable wealth for a few… Clearly this cannot continue, and can only change with a major redesign of the economy. Quakers encourage people to challenge the current economic model status quo which has led us here and to find ways to develop sustainable, equitable structures fit to meet the needs of people and planet today and in future, and which recognise the value of the non-material riches life has to offer.’
