Norwich Friends hold peace camp
‘Despite many obstacles, we must never forget that peace is achievable, and is desired by almost everyone.’
Norwich Quakers organised a peace camp last month to coincide with Refugee Week.
This event on 15 June aimed to remind people that peace is possible and desirable. It also included a ‘peace cycle’, waved off by Vivien Thomas, the lord mayor, and Sirajul Islam, the sheriff. The mayor is one of 8,397 ‘Mayors for Peace’ worldwide working for the total abolition of nuclear weapons.
Norwich, a City of Sanctuary, is ‘one of hundreds of cities, local and regional bodies all around the world who have spoken out in support of the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons through the International Campaign against Nuclear Weapons Cities Appeal’, said the organisers.
Lesley Grahame, from Norwich Meeting, said: ‘Despite many obstacles, we must never forget that peace is achievable, and is desired by almost everyone.’
Local Friends held an outreach stall at the peace camp in St Peter’s church. An attender at the event said it also included ‘a climate cafe run by Mind; children’s activities run by Woodcraft Folk; and a friendly welcome for everyone’.
