Northumbria University hosts Quakers and business event

Quaker business practices took centre stage at a recent event at Northumbria University

The legacy and lessons to be learnt from the business practices of Friends in the past was the subject of a lively event held recently at Northumbria University.

About forty Friends and academics attended the public lecture at Northumbria University in Newcastle on 21 February. It was part of a Responsible Business seminar series jointly sponsored by the university and the Northern Initiative on Business Ethics.

Organised by Nicholas Burton, an academic and Friend from Malton Local Meeting, the event included lectures by Mike King, author of Quakernomics: An Ethical Capitalism, and Richard Turnbull, director of The Centre for Enterprise, Markets and Ethics and author of Quaker Capitalism: Lessons for Today.

Nicholas Burton described ‘Quakernomics’ as a distinctively responsible approach to business, grounded in the theology and practice of Friends. The lectures charted the importance of Friends to the industrial revolution, and the formation of many of today’s industries and businesses, drawing out the lessons and transferable practice to a contemporary setting.
