The Northern Friends Peace Board publishes 'Building Peace in Diverse Britain'

The Northern Friends Peace Board (NFPB) has published a report on a project that has striven to build peace in Britain since the turn of the century.

Building Peace in Diverse Britain looks at steps taken to address concerns about a lack of peace in towns and cities across the country.

The NFPB’s work has focused on areas where it was felt that Quakers could play a positive role. These included supporting listening and dialogue, and taking action against racism and prejudice.

Many of the events run by the Bolton-based organisation are designed to bring young people together in dialogue.

Over the course of the project, a number of themes emerged as important to young participants. Among these were cultural diversity, bullying, stereotyping, and relationships with the police.

The project was reviewed during summer 2015.

In its report, the NFPB highlighted points of learning that they feel may be helpful to Quakers and others. These included: ‘We have much to learn from other community projects that seek to build and promote better relationships’; ‘It is important that young peoples’ voices and experiences are heard’; and ‘This area of peace work, as so many others, is long-term’.
