Friends in Northamptonshire are involved with a local charity in setting up a new male refuge in the north of the county.

It is hoped that the refuge will open next month.

Northampton Women’s Aid, which has worked with victims of domestic abuse for more than forty years, has been relaunched as the Northamptonshire Domestic Abuse Service (NDAS). The aim is to be more inclusive of men and to encourage male victims of abuse to seek help and support.

Working with the NDAS, Northamptonshire Quakers identified a significant shortage in refuge accommodation for male victims.

Theo Sturge, from Northamptonshire Quakers, said: ‘We are very pleased to be providing a house for use as a male refuge. Quakers have a long tradition of seeking out gaps where nothing is being done to help people.’

He added: ‘We see this as an excellent opportunity to fill a need, not just within Northamptonshire, but for the region and beyond. There is a national shortage.’
