Northampton Friends fund Ugandan school
The Friends Community Development Trust (Uganda) marks milestone in new school project
Friends in Northampton are celebrating the news that the final documents have been submitted for a new school in Uganda.
The Friends Community Development Trust (Uganda) (FCDTU) set up the secondary school, which is in the village of Butta in the Manafwa district.
Louise McCann, clerk of FCDTU, told the Friend: ‘The school opened in February, which is the start of the school year in Uganda, but the documents have just been sent to the Department of Education. The school took around six months to build and Northampton Meeting contributed the primary donation to the trust.’
According to FCDTU, secondary education in Uganda is currently only open to those who can afford a private boarding school or are able to undertake a potentially long and hazardous cross-country walk.
They write: ‘A community secondary school would give locals the opportunity to extend their education which will benefit them, by improving their employment prospects, and the community as a whole.’
The Church of Uganda donated the land for the secondary school.
The FCDTU was set up in 2016.
