Friends met in Birmingham to discuss ways of reducing their Meetings' carbon footprints

Eleven Central England Friends met recently in Birmingham to discuss ways to reduce their Meetings’ carbon footprints.

The Friends represented seven Meetings and were joined by a member of Staffordshire Area Meeting, and Michael Addison, newly appointed director of the Northfield Ecocentre. They shared news of a number of initiatives, including vegetable growing on allotments, the installation of curtains to reduce heat loss, and the monitoring of energy use.

Michael explained his career background to Friends and described the skills he could bring to his new role. He defined his personal goal as Ecocentre director ‘working with the community and influencing people to move to low carbon lifestyles’.

Michael asked Friends for their views on the Ecocentre and its work, which currently includes an energy use survey of local Meeting houses.

The group also discussed fossil fuel disinvestment. ‘It was a useful exercise for me to understand the views of stakeholders as we begin to develop a new strategy for the Ecocentre, and particularly how sustainability aligns with Quaker values,’ Michael told the Friend.
