Lincolnshire Friends are celebrating the opening of Newark Meeting House by leading Quaker writer Geoffrey Durham, which took place on 13 October. After the opening he spoke about ‘Why I am a Quaker’ in the adjacent town hall ballroom and emphasised the value of shared spiritual silence.

Chris Rose, member of Newark Meeting, told the Friend: ‘We were delighted with the response, with over 100 people joining us.’

The newly converted Quaker Centre was formerly a small shop with a courtyard. It was spotted by a Newark Quaker and retired architect when it was for sale. He drew up a plan and managed the conversion. Members of the Meeting also contributed to the physical work and created art for decoration. Newark Friends received ‘a generous grant’ from the Burtt Trust and financial help from Lincolnshire Area Meeting.

Chris Rose added: ‘The position of the new Centre has generated a great deal of interest, with many local people enquiring about our Quaker way.’
