A Friend who is a leading figure in a contemporary civil society initiative has been recognised in the New Year’s honours list.

Neil Jameson, executive director of the community activist network Citizens UK, was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) for ‘services to community organising and social justice’.

Neil helped found Citizens UK and has been promoting broad-based community organising across London and the UK since 1989, after training with the Industrial Areas Foundation in the USA.

Citizens UK initiatives include the Living Wage campaign. It has also backed its local chapters in projects such as promoting a credit union in Lambeth and installing CCTV cameras in Nottingham taxis in a bid to prevent passengers from racially abusing drivers.

Neil said: ‘Receiving this honour was a real pleasure, and is great recognition for the work of everyone involved with Citizens UK. We are democrats organising together for a better world with civil society at its heart.’
