New Meeting starts at university

A new Quaker Meeting is being set up at the University of Huddersfield in response to Quaker Life Representative Council’s call for ideas that encourage younger people to take part in the Society

Yorkshire Friends are piloting a new Meeting at the University of Huddersfield in a bid to attract more young people into the Society.

The joint initiative between Huddersfield and Wooldale Meetings will start in October with weekly Meetings for Worship at The Faith Centre on the university campus until Christmas.

Sue Mosley, from Wooldale Meeting, told the Friend that the idea was ‘a direct response to Quaker Life Representative Council’s call for ideas which encourage younger people to take part’. She said: ‘Huddersfield and Wooldale are both very lively, thriving Meetings and we have a great big university in Huddersfield not far away. We realised that students leave home and rock up in town looking for mates, so it was a good opportunity. It’s not easy being a young Quaker.’

With eight people on the committee, the pilot has received funding from Quakers in Yorkshire and Central Yorkshire Area Meeting and will start with a presence at Freshers’ Fair.

Sue Mosley said there had been complications about rules regarding access onto the campus, which had now been resolved. She added: ‘People have been really supportive. It’s not often a new Meeting starts.’
