New custodians for Quaker memorial

‘The custodianship of the memorial has passed to Staffordshire Area Meeting, which originally initiated the concern, and welcomes its return.’

The Quaker Service Memorial Trust had its last meeting last month, ending with what one Friend described as ‘a very positive closing minute’.

The Staffordshire trust was established in 2011 to help set up and support a memorial to remember service from Friends Ambulance Unit (FAU) and Friends Relief Service (FRS) members during world war two. With the Memorial completed, as well as interviews of FAU and FRS members, the trustees believe the work of the trust has been completed.

The minute said: ‘Since 2011 we have had the privilege of meeting many individuals and organisations who have supported our work to build the Quaker Service Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire and our Outreach activities. We record our thanks to all of them, not least the former members of the FAU and FRS whose pacifist ways inspired our work.’

Helen Lockwood, from the trust and Staffordshire Area Meeting, told the Friend: ‘The custodianship of the memorial has passed to Staffordshire Area Meeting, which originally initiated the concern, and welcomes its return.’

The National Memorial Arboretum has thousands of visitors, making it ‘a major source of outreach’, Helen Lockwood said.
