Molly Scott Cato, member of the European parliament (MEP) for the South West of England, has been appointed Green Party spokesperson for UK-EU relations.

The Stroud Meeting Friend, whose remit also includes Gibraltar, will focus on the forthcoming negotiations over Britain’s exit from the European Union.

She told the Friend: ‘The referendum campaign was characterised by the mobilisation of fear for political ends by both sides. This led to anger and division and it is an absolute priority to heal the wounds created in our society. The first step must be for both sides to listen to the other, something that was notably absent during the referendum campaign.’

‘I was also disturbed by the rise of nationalist rhetoric both in the UK and in the US presidential campaign. My considered view is that nationalist sentiment is a precursor to war and should be avoided at all cost. The peace-building role of the European Union is something I value highly. As Brexit speaker for the Green Party I think I could also make use of the Quaker advice to consider it possible that I may be wrong!’ she added.
