Trenches in the Somme Photo: Ernest Brooks / Imperial War Museum

I knew your faces …

My two uncles

I knew your faces …

by Ann Fox 1st September 2017

I knew your faces,
Always had your photos there.
I never knew your voices,
Or smiles and laughter.
I knew a little of your thoughts,
I’ve read your letters,
But we never had a conversation
Or exchange of views.

I’ve seen where you lie
In France near the Somme.
We’ll never know, given the chance,
What you might have become.
Twenty two and twenty, my uncles,
My mother’s brothers.
I will remember you,
We will remember you.
