The Peace Pledge Union reports a surge in interest from churches

More churches are interested in offering white poppies as well as red poppies in the run-up to Remembrance Sunday on 11 November.

According to the Peace Pledge Union (PPU), since the launch its ‘White Poppies for Churches’ pack, in partnership with the Christian pacifist charity the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FoR), the number of churches enquiring about the availability of white poppies has risen for the first time.

Symon Hill, coordinator of the PPU, told the Friend: ‘We formally launched the pack on Thursday [18 October] and by the end of Friday [29 October] we had nineteen orders. The number of Quaker Meetings willing to be listed as places where people can buy white poppies has also gone up.’

However, the PPU said there has also been ‘hostility and misunderstanding’ in ‘some quarters’.

According to the PPU one church refused to allow some congregation members to hang a remembrance banner in the church because it features white poppies.

The ‘White Poppies for Churches’ pack follows the successful introduction of a ‘White Poppies for Schools’ pack last year.
