Molly Scott Cato backs green employment
report published
Quaker MEP Molly Scott Cato has published a report on the potential for replacing Trident missile manufacturing jobs with positions in the green sector.
The report focuses on the Devonport naval base in Plymouth and has a number of key findings. One of these is that the base, which is the largest in Western Europe, would remain a major local employer without Trident.
Trident renewal, the report argues, would also come at a huge cost: ‘It is estimated that renewing Trident [at the suggested life-time cost of £200 billion] would safeguard just 11,500 civilian jobs in the UK as a whole, making them some of the most expensive jobs in the world.’
According to the report, Plymouth already has an emerging green economy, but its growth is being hindered by ‘the staggering current and proposed costs’ of Trident. ‘We can abandon Trident replacement while maintaining employment and start transferring investment and skills into socially useful and sustainable jobs, making use of the fantastic skills and resources available at Davenport,’ Molly Scott Cato concluded.
Molly Scott Cato is member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the South West of England and Gibraltar, and Green Party spokesperson for UK-EU relations. She was recently selected as the Green Party candidate for Bristol West in the event of a general election.
She said she was ‘honoured to have been trusted’ by the Green Party to contest the seat and described Bristol as ‘a beacon of green creativity’.

Molly appears to be my kind of lady.
May many more buds and shoots appear on her branches.
Appear, shoot and unfurl.
