Friends gather to discuss mental health

by Ian Kirk-Smith 14th March 2014

Friends from across Britain are meeting at Friends House in London on Saturday 15 March to discuss whether a specifically Quaker understanding of mental health has emerged from recent concerns and gatherings.

The event is organised by a group of members and directors of The Retreat in York.

David Smith, director of development at The Retreat, said to the Friend: ‘At a time when mental health is high up on both the political and healthcare agendas, The Retreat is pleased to support Friends as they ground their witness of mental health and consider how this one-day event can lead to further learning, sharing and development.’

I welcome a rising interest among Friends of mental health issues. I hope the event on Saturday looks at the issues in the round, and as they affect the practice of Quakerism: therefore considering the impact of such issues on worship, family life and employment, especially Quaker employment [because that is an area about which we ought to be able to do something].
