Meeting for Sufferings: Young Friends ask ‘connecting questions’

Friends aged fourteen to eighteen joined Meeting for Sufferings for the Young People's Participation Day on 6 October

The Young People’s Participation Day was held in parallel with Meeting for Sufferings on Saturday 6 October. Young Friends, aged between fourteen and eighteen, joined Sufferings for opening and closing worship.

The hope was for ‘a day of great mutual benefit to share across the generations,’ said Anne Ullathorne, clerk of Meeting for Sufferings.

In shaping their responses to ‘diversity’, Lucy and Angela, the two clerks of Junior Yearly Meeting, invited Friends to discuss four ‘connecting questions’ with their neighbours. Described as ‘a way of building connections between generations’, these were:

  • ‘What is your most significant Quaker memory?’
  •
  • ‘What helps you feel like you belong to your Quaker community?’
  •
  • ‘What do you treasure about Meeting for Worship?’
  •
  • ‘How has Quakerism made a difference to your life?’

After much quaking in middle-school Meeting, aged about 14, I stood and said “I wonder how many of us really believe in God”
We all took turns with readings but no-one had ever actually stood in ministry. Afterwards some asked me if the teachers had put me up to it.
Seventy years later I remember the event vividly.
