Two new Meeting for Sufferings groups had their Terms of Reference approved by representatives at Sufferings.

The Standing Nominations Group, set up in October 2018, will be responsible for bringing forward the names of Friends to serve for appointments referred to it by Meeting for Sufferings and will consist of three to five serving members of Sufferings.

The Sustainability Monitoring Group, set up in November 2018, will be responsible for monitoring the Yearly Meeting’s commitment to sustainability. This will include monitoring receipt of reports from trustees, committees and Area Meetings, as well as ensuring that Sufferings includes a substantive agenda item about sustainability at least once a year. It will comprise three serving members of Sufferings, with the ability to co-opt one or two additional members if required.

Some Friends raised concerns that central and standing committees would only be reporting annually on sustainability as, in light of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report last year, ‘we have twelve years’ to limit climate change and annual reporting seemed ‘a little bit slow’. Others urged caution, saying ‘we do need to be mindful of the logistics of this’.
