Meeting for Sufferings: Sudan
‘We pray for all Sudanese people, particularly those suffering as a consequence of the current conflict.’
Next on the agenda was a letter of concern from Doncaster Friends calling on church leaders to show support for the city’s large Sudanese community, and Sudan as a whole.
There is now ‘an established and recognisable Sudanese community in Doncaster’, said the letter, adding: ‘it would be appropriate for local churches to recognise the presence of this community… who are currently experiencing great pain and suffering as Sudan lurches dangerously close to civil war’.
A Friend from the relevant Area Meeting (Sheffield & Balby) said Doncaster Meeting has much experience working with refugees, so ‘if anyone is interested and wants advice, the Meeting would be happy to hear from you’.
In ministry, one Quaker noted how rich it was to be receiving these minutes, as it informed Friends of things they might not know about, and the work being covered.
Meanwhile, a Friend who worked in Sudan for Quakers in the mid 1980s remembered Friends who lost their lives in a bomb, to which the gathering responded by holding them in the light.
Another Friend read a poem written by a refugee, and a minute was approved saying: ‘We pray for all Sudanese people, particularly those suffering as a consequence of the current conflict.’
