Meeting for Sufferings: Refurbishment budget revised

A revised budget for the Large Meeting House refurbishment has been adopted

At Meeting for Sufferings on 6 July, Friends heard a report on the minutes of a recent meeting of Britain Yearly Meeting (BYM) trustees.

As part of this, it was reported that a revised budget for the Large Meeting House refurbishment has been adopted. This was due in part to the length of time since it was set, increased costs, especially in VAT, and problems that originally could only be estimated before the work had begun. This will increase the overall cost of the refurbishment to £5.03 million and includes the higher VAT, fees and a contingency provision.

One Friend commented that the contingency was set at just seven per cent, and as an architect, she wondered if this was high enough. Sandy Horsfall, co-clerk of the Project Board, said that it was ten per cent of the budgeted building cost and she was confident that the project would come in on budget.

The cost can still be met from the resources available from the sale of the Courtauld House lease.
