Meeting for Sufferings: Refugees and asylum seekers

Meeting for Sufferings heard of concerns expressed by two Area Meetings

by Elinor Smallman 8th July 2016

Minutes from Notts and Derby Area Meeting and Mid-Essex Area Meeting concerning the refugee crisis were sent to Meeting for Sufferings.

Friends heard that, following discernment, Quaker Peace & Social Witness (QPSW) Central Committee decided to initiate a project, entitled ‘Responding to forced migration’, to consider what Friends can contribute.

A bid for legacy funding for a three-year project, which will include the recruitment of a full-time worker, has been put together and the funding for the first year has been allocated.

QPSW is also working closely with the Quaker Asylum and Refugee Network (QARN). They and the Quaker Council for European Affairs (QCEA) are running a conference on ‘Forced migration: How can Quakers respond?’ at the Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre in February 2017. At least ten places will be reserved for representatives from other European Yearly Meetings.
