Meeting for Sufferings: Quaker UN Committe

A change has been made in the way in which people are appointed to the Quaker United Nations Committee.

A change has been made in the way in which people are appointed to the Quaker United Nations Committee.  Following the 2012 review of the relationship between the Quaker United Nations Office in Geneva (QUNO) and Britain Yearly Meeting (BYM), Meeting for Sufferings (MfS) has been asked to take on the responsibility for the appointment of three of the five BYM members to the Quaker United Nations Committee. One place is the general secretary of QPSW ex officio and QPSW Central Committee will appoint another member to maintain the link to their work.

Five members of the committee are also appointed by Friends World Committee for Consultation (FWCC).

Since 2011 QUNO has been an independent organisation under Swiss law. Previously, Quaker Peace & Social Witness (QPSW) had employed the staff directly and QUNO’s work was part of QPSW’s work.

To re-establish the relationship between QUNO and BYM rather than just QPSW, the appointment of members of the committee will move to MfS in line with other appointments, such as those to FWCC and to the Quaker Council for European Affairs.
