Meeting for Sufferings: New Canterbury commitment group recommended
It was proposed at Meeting for Sufferings that a new Canterbury Commitment Group be formed
It was proposed at Meeting for Sufferings that a new Canterbury Commitment Group be formed to take up the work of the Minute 36 (Canterbury) Commitment Group. The group, it was suggested, would take on a leadership role and provide encouragement, support and guidance to all parts of the Quaker community in Britain. It would also organise a national gathering, ideally every year or at least every two years.
A Friend stated that ‘we all have a responsibility for embedding the Canterbury commitment in our lives and work’ and that it was ‘the central challenge of our age’. ‘We are challenged,’ another Friend said, ‘to be patterns’.
The action taken by Quakers in Britain – including the divestment of investments by Britain Yearly Meeting from fossil fuels, the Swanwick conference and the witness and enormous range of practical activities undertaken by Friends – was highlighted.
The intention, a Friend said, was to have a group of six or eight Friends who would be champions and to second people to the group as necessary.
Friends recommended that a new group be formed. It was suggested that a new different name be created.
