Meeting for Sufferings: Indefinite detention of migrants and asylum seekers

Quakers express outrage at this disgraceful practice

by Trish Carn 6th April 2012

Meeting for Sufferings (MfS) ‘expressed its outrage at this disgraceful practice’. Quaker Peace & Social Witness (QPSW) is asked to produce a statement of behalf of MfS based on the statement produced by the Quaker Asylum and Refugee Network (QARN) and reflecting the feelings of MfS asking for the immediate end of indefinite detention.

Our parliamentary liaison secretary, Michael Bartlet, advises that one sentence in the QARN statement referring to the training of immigration judges may not be completely accurate.

The QARN statement was supported by minutes from Leicester Area Meeting, Leeds Area Meeting and Oxford and Swindon Area Meeting.

While awaiting the QPSW statement, MfS asks Local and Area Meetings to write to their MPs using the background information in the QARN statement, which can be found at: www.qarn.org.uk/homepage/category/indefinite-detention/

I am very glad to read of this. I have a quantity of postcards produced by the Glasgow campaign to Welcome Refugees, which are intended to be sent to MPs. I can send them to anyone interested in having some for a group/Meeting/workplace.
