Meeting for Sufferings: Disposal of high level nuclear waste in Cumbria
Support given to Swarthmoor Area Meeting's report to the minister for energy and climate change
Robert Straughton spoke to this. The minute states: ‘How to appropriately dispose of radioactive waste has been researched and discussed for over half a century. There are implications locally, nationally, internationally and globally. The danger of contamination to the planet and all life on it will continue for thousands of years.’
The situation in Cumbria has arisen as local councillors volunteered to look for appropriate areas for a long-term storage facility. This storage area needs to be six kilometres square at a minimum depth of 500 feet with a maximum of 3,000 feet. However, areas with mountains that have heavy rainfall have been discussed as inappropriate. Cumbria has just had one of its worst floods in a thousand years. It would seem that this area may be inappropriate.
The clerk was asked, as a matter of urgency, to write a letter in support of Swarthmoor Area Meeting’s report to the minister for energy and climate change. ‘The letter should be based on and express our spiritual testimony to our concern for truth and integrity in public affairs and to sustainability.’
