Meeting for Sufferings: Canterbury Commitment Group interim report
The Canterbury Commitment Group presented their interim report to Meeting for Sufferings
The Canterbury Commitment Group presented their interim report. The group told Meeting for Sufferings that there had been widespread approval of the decision to publicly disinvest in fossil fuels. They said that BYM was the first institution to do this as a body.
It was stated that Friends need to move towards a low carbon sustainable community. The two things within their control are the output of Quaker properties and that of themselves as individuals. As a result, the Group is planning a conference: ‘Transforming ourselves: transforming the system’ to be held at the Hayes Conference Centre, Swanwick, in March 2014. The event is aimed at Friends who have championed sustainability or would like to do so; seasoned Friends in eldership and oversight; Friends with experience of work under concern in this area; and Friends with experience of activism in this or other areas.
The group also reported on a telephone survey of Friends in Yorkshire that, while not scientific, showed a wide variety of activities on the part of different Meetings. It highlighted that ‘people can be encouraged by small things and also the spiritual depth and experience which Friends encounter when we do what we feel to be right’.
