Friends are invited to 'Pause for Peace'

Quakers have been invited to help build a group meditation for world peace.

The ‘Pause for Peace’ silent vigil created by Taunton Friend Sue Clarke started on New Year’s Eve when people were invited to sit for ten to sixty minutes in the hour after midnight (local time) to pray for world peace.

Sue Clarke, from Taunton Meeting, told the Friend that the vigil was inspired by Taunton Quaker’s peace vigil last year. ‘It is difficult to say how many people joined in as there was no sign-up, or organised event, which was part of its ethos.’

However, the message was posted all around the world, including in Canada, US, Bolivia, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Germany, Scandinavia, Cambodia, Thailand, India, and Australia. Shared by Sue with 800-plus Facebook friends, various religious and peace organisations, Christian communities, and the Glastonbury Unity Candle, Sue said: ‘I was contacted by people I didn’t know personally who had heard about it, so word got around. When I did the vigil at midnight UK time, I felt a deep connection with others participating, and someone in Canada felt the same when she did the vigil in Western Time.’

Sue now plans to grow the meditation group and is looking for Friends to get involved. ‘I felt very strongly that the silent power of goodwill, prayer and peace is a powerful “weapon” (for want of a better word) in the struggle for peace. I would be so pleased if the Quakers could help me with this. I am working alone on it at the moment. I think a web page would be a good idea, as I currently only have a Facebook page attached to my personal page.’

The Pause for Peace group is being supported by local Friends.
