After Meister Eckhart

We went looking for God

the way one looks for a cow:

expecting warm flanks, soft cheese

while all the universe ran

away from us, its rivers of milk

lit a way for us

but we were too busy

looking for cows,

in dark byres.

We kept our eyes

down, burrowed toward cow

pats while all the world

stayed awake for us—

But we were looking for meat

we could skewer in our little fires.

The spheres of delight

were already disappearing

singing in flames —

for us. But we were busy

we thought, we had something

better to do—looking for cows—

I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do, or any kindness or abilities that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer it or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.
