‘Is this the loneliest generation?’ asked Brian Brady in a recent article (The Independent on Sunday 13 January).  He was commenting on figures from the Office of National Statistics, which showed that the number of people living alone in the UK has now reached 7.6 million, an increase of a million since 1996. With this came an increase in loneliness, experienced particularly by the growing number of older people. About a third of these live alone and for a fifth there is contact with family, friends or neighbours only once a week or less. Almost five million say that the television is their main source of company.
