London meeting to ‘protect our planet’
Friends in London gathered to share experiences of running a sustainability event
Seven Friends from Blackheath Meeting shared their experiences with Quakers this month of running an event about sustainability commitments. Forty Friends from Meetings across Greater London met at Friends House on 11 January to hear about the Meeting’s September gathering ‘Protecting our Planet – yes we can’.
Quaker Valerie Preston-Dunlop, one of the organisers, told the Friend that the event was held to encourage and enable other Meetings to hold their own sessions. She said: ‘The seven Blackheath Friends, who included one Young Friend, gave practical information on planning a focused and tightly run event. The Blackheath event’s range of five-minute speakers, from MPs to school students, water specialists to tree planters, had been balanced by one-minute contributions from the invited audience who represented organisations including a college, local traders, political parties and churches.’
The group also urged London Friends, especially small Meetings, to work with other organisations.
The earlier event on 27 September urged Friends to lobby for reduced traffic from diesel and petrol transport and push for more and better integrated public transport. It also recommended planting trees and reminded Friends not to forget water, reducing consumption, and re-using for gardens and cleaning.
