New photovoltaic panels have been purchased for Liverpool Meeting House.

The social enterprise café that was opened in 2014 has contributed to significantly higher electricity bills for the Meeting house.

The panels on the Meeting house roof will help defray the increasing cost. Building coordinator Andrew Backhouse explained to the Friend that ’not only would installing solar panels improve our sustainability, it would also, if we worked quickly, help to pay for itself within about eight years’.

Andrew said that the panels are one of many initiatives designed to improve the sustainability of the Meeting house. These include voltage optimisation and the installation of extra bike racks. He added: ‘We have room for more solar panels and I would like to increase our percentage of waste that is recycled to more than forty percent, though it is hard in a city centre building where you cannot compost and where rats abound…’
