Listening to trauma

Andrew Lane reflects on the work Charles Tauber in Vukovar

In June Charles Tauber reached twenty years living in Vukovar, a town near the Croatian-Serbian border. Vukovar was devastated by violent conflict during the Yugoslav wars of the early and mid-1990s. About 3,000 were killed or went missing, and 22,000 civilians fled the town as refugees.

Charles was a GP in the Netherlands and a member of Netherlands Yearly Meeting, working particularly with refugees. He became involved in the former Yugoslavia in 1993, first in Bosnia and then Croatia. In the early years Charles worked alongside international organisations, such as the UN. Today, these organisations have long since gone and Charles’ Coalition for Work With Psychotrauma and Peace (CWWPP) is one of only two small NGOs that work in Vukovar.
