Lewes Meeting is holding a series of events to celebrate its reopening after fifteen months of major work. Chris Lawson, from the Meeting, told the Friend: ‘The aims of the work were to improve accessibility and sustainability, apart from essential repairs. A large foyer has been created, and all areas can now be reached on the level from a new street entrance. Insulation has been done as far as possible within the 240-year-old building’s listed status.’

The events in May are to thank all those who financially supported the Sussex East Area Meeting project. The renovation was completed at the end of January.

Lewes Friends also welcomed members of Sussex and Surrey Regional Meeting on 23 March. ‘Appropriately the theme was “Disability – Equality and Spirituality”,’ said Chris Lawson. ‘Ade Couper, from the Quaker Disability Equality Group, spoke from personal and professional experience, stressing the importance of seeing the whole person regardless of any condition with which they have to live. Clare Dimyon spoke about her experience of high-functioning autism. She shared examples of when the gap between her autistic view of life, and the neurotypical view, gave her difficulties, and when it may even have saved her life. Friends were challenged to reflect on their own attitudes and on how welcoming their Meetings and Meeting houses were to everyone.’
