From universal credit to too middle class

To Martin Quick’s account of the flaws in the planned ‘Universal credit’ (23 March) might be added a picture of the reality of the employment situation generally. The latest statistics (for November 2011 to January 2012) show 478,000 vacancies and 2,666,000 unemployed. It has been thought that actual vacancies are generally about fifty per cent more than those recorded, but even allowing for that there are about two million people who have no chance of getting jobs today – even if unemployment and jobs were evenly spread around the country.
