From integrity to the NHS

Integrity

I was very moved by the call by Jill Segger (13 July) for a statement on honesty, integrity and plain dealing in our national institutions. I am rather wary of statements for the sake of statements and sometimes I feel that they can be so bland or obvious as to pass by unnoticed.

We do, however, have testimonies, such as witness through word and deed, in and to the public, based on spiritual values. Is this not the occasion, therefore, when we might offer a vision of a better way to society at large, especially since the successors of institutions we were involved in founding, Barclays and others, often seem to be acting in direct opposition to the values we and many others still cherish? We should not be remembered just for our historical importance. We still have a message to proclaim, do we not?
