From Ramallah to Libya

Boycott, divestment and sanctions

We rejoiced hearing the reports from so many sources that you have decided to join others who boycott goods from the illegal settlements according to International law. Your letter [informing of the boycott decision] is very moving and inspiring, and a sign of hope. In our struggle for freedom, we need community. We need each other more than ever before, and we need to build together a local and global movement for peace with justice, for the struggle is one. You did not act out of fear, anger or blame, or out of guilt or shame. You have acted out of hope, and in the service of what you love.

To create the world we want, we have to translate that hope and love into action; for faith without action is dead and useless.

Thank you for moving from statements to direct nonviolent action like divesting or boycotting settlement goods. Solidarity means strengthening our openness and communication with each other.

Thank you for affirming to us a spirit of hope and compassion, available to all, by which our lives are made more whole, more creative, more harmonious, as we draw directly upon that power around us, and within us and within all life.

Martin Luther King, Jr, reminded us that ‘injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere’.

Thank you for continuing to fan the embers into flames of light, no matter how small, because these embers of light give hope to those in the forefront of the struggle and keep the work for justice and peace in the Middle East alive.

With warm loving greetings to all of you, dear Friends. In hope and love,

Jean Zaru, clerk Ramallah Friends Meeting
