From the census to fairtrade

The census

In my original letter (25 February) regarding the census I suggested that we, as Friends, should consider boycotting it. One of my arguments was a fear that Lockheed Martin would, under the existing patriot act in the USA, have to pass on the results to their government and thus information would/could fall into the hands of the CIA/FBI or other kinds of such bodies.

After some reflection I did fill in the form. My thinking was that by doing so I would be helping future governments in formulating plans for the future and, anyway, the work had already been given to this company and my little protest wouldn’t change that.

An incident happened the day after I posted the return. I phoned a company to order some goods. They asked for the usual stuff, my postcode, phone number and such. After the order was duly concluded, the nice lady asked me if my wife would like to order some knitting wool. She knew that she knitted and also that we had recently become great grandparents!

I now wonder if I needed to fill in the boxes.

George Orwell must be laughing in his grave!
