Leighton Park School remembers first world war
The causes and consequences of conflict have been at the heart of recent commemorations
A concern with the causes and consequences of conflict was at the heart of a series of events organised by Leighton Park School to commemorate the first world war.
The events were designed to commemorate the war while reflecting Quaker testimonies to peace and reconciliation. The school has spent the last six months planning and delivering them.
A special open air Meeting for Worship, which took place on the first day of the academic year, remembered the twenty-eight Old Leightonians who lost their lives in the conflict.
Year nine students undertook a ‘Global Awareness project’, looking at issues such as the morality of weapons of mass destruction. Year eight students examined the role of conscientious objectors. The school’s Sixth Form Peace Conference enabled year twelve and thirteen students to debate the nature of peace and conflict in today’s world.
The school’s History Club developed a database of stories of the Leighton Park community’s links with war. This aims to show ‘how we have all be affected by war and conflict and to illustrate the significance, tragedy and hope that comes out of these conflicts’, a school representative said.
