Leicester Friends in Christmas witness
Friends set up a stall to coincide with a Christmas market in Leicester
Leicester Quakers made the most of a festive event to witness for climate justice this month.
Mariette Clare, from Leicester Meeting, told the Friend: ‘We took advantage of a street Christmas fair… which also attracted a large number of people. We set up a stall outside the front steps with a “climate justice” banner and provided a choice of six stamps made from lino-cuts, along with stamp pads. Each had an animal and a word to describe what the world needs, to prevent run-away climate catastrophe.’
The Friends then invited passersby to make a stamp for themselves, and another to add to a large painted tree. Created by ‘a gifted Friend’, the stamps were: the stoat of equality, the dove of peace, the hedgehog of justice, the swift of urgency, the owl of wisdom, and the squirrel of love.
‘We expected to attract children,’ said Mariette, ‘but many adults stopped and joined in, enjoying the playfulness and laughing.’
